Axe Throwing Safety: Everything You Need to Know
Safety is our top priority. Learn about our safety protocols, proper handling techniques, and what to expect during your session.
Safety First at Tacoma Axe Throwing
At Tacoma Axe Throwing, safety is our absolute priority. We've maintained a perfect safety record while serving thousands of customers, and we're committed to keeping it that way. Here's everything you need to know about staying safe while having fun.
Our Safety Protocols
Every session at Tacoma Axe Throwing begins with a comprehensive safety briefing led by our trained coaches. This briefing covers:
- Proper axe handling and grip techniques
- Safe throwing form and follow-through
- Lane safety rules and boundaries
- Emergency procedures
- What to do if an axe doesn't stick
Essential Safety Rules
Our facility enforces strict safety rules that all participants must follow:
- Never throw while someone is in front of the target - This is our most important rule. Only one person throws at a time, and everyone must be behind the throwing line.
- Wait for the all-clear signal - Before retrieving axes, wait for the coach's signal that it's safe to approach the target.
- Wear closed-toe shoes - This is mandatory for everyone's safety. No sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed footwear.
- Remove loose clothing and jewelry - Long hair should be tied back, and loose jewelry should be removed to prevent accidents.
- Responsible alcohol consumption - We sell alcohol for responsible consumption while you're here, but drinks are not allowed in the throwing lanes. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who appears intoxicated.
- Follow coach instructions at all times - Our coaches are trained to ensure everyone's safety. Their instructions must be followed immediately.
Proper Axe Handling
Learning to handle an axe safely is the foundation of our safety program:
Carrying the Axe: Always carry the axe with the blade facing down and toward the ground. Never carry it by the blade or with the blade facing yourself or others.
Passing the Axe: When handing an axe to someone else, pass it handle-first with the blade facing away from both people. The receiver should grip the handle before the releaser lets go.
Setting Down the Axe: When not in use, axes should be placed blade-down on the designated rack or holding area, never left on the floor or leaning against walls.
What to Wear
Proper attire is essential for safety:
- Closed-toe shoes - Athletic shoes or boots are ideal. No open-toed footwear allowed.
- Comfortable clothing - Wear clothes that allow free movement of your arms and shoulders.
- Tie back long hair - Hair below shoulder length should be secured.
- Remove loose jewelry - Long necklaces, dangling earrings, and loose bracelets should be removed.
- Avoid long scarves - These can get caught during the throwing motion.
Our Facility Safety Features
Tacoma Axe Throwing is designed with safety as the top priority:
- Individual lanes - Each lane is designed for one thrower at a time, unlike shared bay-style venues. This ensures maximum safety and focus for each thrower.
- Safety barriers - Each lane has protective barriers to contain axes and prevent bounce-back.
- Controlled throwing areas - Clearly marked throwing lines and safety zones.
- Professional equipment - We use specifically designed throwing axes that are balanced and maintained regularly.
- Trained coaches - All our coaches undergo extensive safety training and certification.
- Emergency protocols - Clear procedures for any situation, with first aid kits readily available.
Our Unique Lane Setup
Unlike some venues that use shared bay-style throwing areas where multiple people throw simultaneously, Tacoma Axe Throwing features individual lanes designed for one thrower at a time. This design choice prioritizes safety in several ways:
- Complete focus - Each thrower can concentrate entirely on their technique without distractions.
- Controlled environment - Only one person is in the throwing area at any given time, eliminating any risk of interference.
- Personalized coaching - Our coaches can provide individualized attention to each thrower.
- Retrieval safety - Only the thrower approaches the target to retrieve their axe, with coach supervision.
Age Requirements and Supervision
We welcome throwers of various ages, with appropriate supervision:
- Minimum age: Participants must be at least 12 years old.
- Minors (12-17): Must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who signs a waiver.
- Adult supervision: Our coaches provide constant supervision during all sessions.
What Happens If Safety Rules Are Violated
We take safety seriously. If a participant repeatedly violates safety rules or refuses to follow coach instructions, we reserve the right to end their session without refund. This policy ensures everyone's safety and enjoyment.
Our Safety Record
Tacoma Axe Throwing has maintained a perfect safety record since opening. Our comprehensive safety protocols, trained staff, and well-designed facility have allowed thousands of people to enjoy axe throwing safely. We're proud of this record and work hard to maintain it every day.
